My Day of Ceremony
The ceremony for recipients of the National Humanities Medal and the National Medal for the Arts was held in the East Room of the White House. President and Mrs. Bush ran the show. I knew that I would have only a few seconds contact with GWB on the podium, so I wore a pair of boots as a topic of conversation. "Like your boots," he said. "They're Libertys," I said. He nodded, as any son of the Lone Star State would. I had the pleasure of meeting Oliva de Havilland, who received the Arts Medal. […] read

That's More Like It
Unlike Lindsey Graham, Eric Cantor won't be Obama's cabana boy: Mr. Cantor said Republicans should "be very wise about the battles we fight," but that they should fight every time there's a principle involved. For example, he disagrees with pundits who say Republicans should forgo issues such as immigration. "It's not a dead issue. It's about how do we go about finally enforcing the law, and that's both in the interior as well as at the border," he said, adding that Democrats are likely […] read

I Smell A Movie Deal
Indiana male and female prison inmates crawl through ceiling passages to make a love connection. And, heck if they can cast Annette Bening as Helen Thomas, there's really no reason they can't get super creative here. read

We're Talking About the Vice-Presidential Nominee, Right?
I'm sorry, but I find David Frum's attempt to explain his Sarah Palin problem to be pretty thin gruel. Leaving aside the fact that Governor Palin ran her own government pretty well, I understand the point David's trying to make and don't think it's entirely without merit, but I'm still at a loss why vice-presidential nominees are suddenly the day-to-day managers of the federal government according to many of Palin's critics. This is a very new standard. And for all the handwringing about her […] read

The P.C. Civil War?
Today's Between the Covers interview is with Harry Crocker, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Civil War. It's a spirited discussion that pits Harry's southern sympathies against my own Midwestern nationalism. Last week, for those who were cruising or otherwise distracted, we posted two very interesting podcasts: foreign-policy historian George Herring (a worthy Pulitzer candidate) and science-fiction author Orson Scott Card (on his new novel, the war on terror, and […] read

Catching Up on the Immigration Circus
According to DNA testing by the State Department, as many as 30,000 bogus relatives of Somali refugees may have been admitted to the United States since 2003. (More here.) "The Department of Homeland Security has significantly narrowed the scope of a planned crackdown on federal contractor's employment of illegal immigrants." Contractors will still have to use the E-Verify system, but only those with large contracts, and only for workers actually on the contracts, as opposed to all their […] read

This Should Be H.R. 1 Next Year
A great idea from Frum: In fact, here's a very practical immediate suggestion for Republicans: How about a law forbidding campaign contributions by officials of companies in which the federal government holds an ownership stake? Otherwise, banks will be giving massive amounts of money to politicians who have given even more massive sums to the banks. A Democratic Congress may refuse to adopt such a measure, but even opening a conversation on the topic may
