907 accused of fraud over Katrina, Rita claims; U.S. probes Ike, Gustav reports
The Justice Department reports that 907 people nationwide are facing fraud charges related to contracts or claims for Hurricanes Katrina or Rita. The department's Katrina Fraud Task Force also is investigating 667 calls relating to possible fraud from Hurricane Gustav and 466 complaints regarding Hurricane Ike, The Times-Picayune of New Orleans writes. One indictment alleges a false claim in Galveston for Hurricane Ike from a woman the Justice Department accuses of filing a fraudulent claim... read

Yet Another Slick Sarah Palin Secret E-Mail Account
[…] campaign account, with access confined to "a group of people, her closest confidants and co-workers and advisers and the person she sleeps with." The existence of additional private e-mail accounts may affect two state probes into whether Palin, her husband and her staff attempted to influence the job status of a state trooper who divorced Palin's sister. "Fresh face," my ass. Sarah Palin is every bit the sneak and the snake in the grass as the rest of the rotted-out Republican gang. read

Regulon organization of Arabidopsis
[…] this model plant, the organization of expression of Arabidopsis genome is only partially understood. Here, we create a coexpression network from a 22,746 Affymetrix probes dataset derived from 963 microarray chips that query the transcriptome in response to a wide variety of environmentally, genetically, and developmentally induced perturbations. Results: Markov chain graph clustering of the coexpression network delineates 998 regulons ranging from one to 1623 genes in size. To assess the […] read

Dion Wins Lucelia Prize With Edgy Pseudo-Exhibits
Organizing a career retrospective of artist Mark Dion wouldn't be easy. His work probes the whole idea of the museum show and sometimes even takes the form of pseudo-exhibitions. Put on a show of Dion's displays and you risk an infinite regress, like looking at a mirror in a mirror. read

Transient hyperaemic response to assess vascular reactivity of skin: effect of topical anaesthesia
[…] were applied and covered with an occlusive dressing for 60 min. Blood flow-flux and the hyperaemic response measurements were then repeated, with the laser Doppler probes sited over the areas of skin to which the local anaesthetic creams had been applied. Measurements were made at 60, 90, and 120 min after the application of the creams. The THR ratio (THRR) was calculated at each time point, defined as the net hyperaemic flow-flux divided by the baseline flow-flux. Results At 60 min, Ametop […] read

LOMA: A fast method to generate efficient tagged-random primers despite amplification bias of random PCR on pathogens
[…] We describe a model that predicts the amplification efficiency of a given random primer on a target viral genome. The prediction allows us to filter false-negative probes of the genome that lie in regions of poor random PCR amplification and improves the accuracy of pathogen detection. Subsequently, we propose LOMA, an algorithm to generate random primers that have good amplification efficiency. Wet-lab validation showed that the generated random primers improve the amplification efficiency […] read

Human MLPA Probe Design (H-MAPD): a probe design tool for both electrophoresis-based and bead-coupled human multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification assays
[…] is yet available that performs bead-coupled MLPA probe design. Results: We have developed H-MAPD, a web-based tool that automates the generation and selection of probes for human genomic MLPA. The software performs physical-chemical property tests using UNAFold software, and uniqueness tests using the UCSC genome browser. H-MAPD supports both traditional electrophoresis-based assays, as well as FlexMAP bead-coupled MLPA. Conclusions: H-MAPD greatly reduces the efforts for human genomic […] read
